What is an Actuary?

Actuaries are professionals who specialize in evaluating financial risks. Actuaries have a specialized mathematics, statistics, and financial theory to study uncertain future events, especially those of concern to insurance and pension programs. Actuarial Positions:

Actuarial Analyst: Analysts are typically entry-level Actuaries who assist in evaluating the likelihood of events and the financial consequences of their occurrence.

Senior Actuarial Analyst: After a few years on the job, actuarial analysts can advance to a more senior senior role. These senior analysts typically take on additional duties like mentoring or leading projects for example.

Actuarial Associate: Associates are usually credentialed actuaries. The credentials are often validated by professional exams passed. These professionals are responsible for more complex analyses and are sometimes involved in strategic direction for organizations.

Actuarial Consultant: These professionals offer advisory services to businesses and other organizations.

Pricing Actuary: Pricing actuaries are involved in developing rates/pricing for insurance products. The overall goal is to set competitive and profitable prices while balancing risk factors and market trends.

Reserving Actuary: Reserving actuaries are primarily focused on the future liabilities of insurance companies. Primary role of this position is to ensure an organization or company’s long term financial stability.

Product Development Actuary: These actuaries are involved in designing new insurance products. They use their knowledge of market demands and risk assessment to create innovative solutions for customers.

Risk Management Actuary: Risk management actuaries identify and analyze the risks that could impact an organization’s financial health. They develop strategies to mitigate these risks and protect the company’s interests.

Actuaries hold a range of job titles that reflect a specialized needed expertise across a wide range of industries and institutions.  These positions are an integral part of not only businesses and organization viability but are key to the global economy.
